How to layer cosmetics correctly: serum, cream and eye cream in the right order
Autor: Temperance Date: 01. 03. 2026
Proper layering of cosmetics is one of the most common questions in skin care. Many people invest in quality products, but the results are not visible because they use cosmetics in the wrong order. The skin has its own physiological laws and these must be respected. If we apply products incorrectly, the active ingredients may not be absorbed, they may block each other or even cause skin irritation.
The aim of this article is to explain in detail and clearly the order in which to apply cosmetics, why this order is important and how to create a functional skin routine without unnecessary steps. The article is intended for beginners and for those who have been using cosmetics for a long time, but want to get the most out of it.
Quick answer: in what order to apply cosmetics
The basic rule of layering cosmetics says that products are applied from the lightest consistency to the thickest. The skin can absorb watery and light textures much more easily than thick creams and oils. If the order were reversed, heavier products would create a barrier through which the active ingredients would no longer get through.
The correct order of cosmetics is as follows:
make-up removal, skin cleansing, skin toning, serum, eye cream, face cream and finally, a cream with OF, so-called SPF, should come.
This order applies to most skin types and is a universal foundation on which to build an individual routine.
At Temperance, you will find up to 10 steps according to Korean skin care - the basic steps are supplemented with nourishing ampoules or a face mask, which are used 1-2 times in 2 weeks.
Why is proper layering of cosmetics so important
The skin functions as a protective barrier between the body and the external environment. Its main task is to protect the body from water loss and the penetration of harmful substances. This is why the skin naturally prevents the penetration of foreign substances inside. Cosmetic products are designed to respect this barrier and at the same time be able to gently overcome it.
If cosmetics are applied in the wrong order, the active ingredients do not have a chance to penetrate the deeper layers of the skin. For example, if a face cream is applied immediately after cleansing, when the skin still has a “scattered pH – i.e. its protective layer”, it may happen that the active ingredients from the cream do not penetrate the skin but remain on its surface. The result is reduced effectiveness of the products and the feeling that the cosmetics “do not work”.
Proper layering also affects skin sensitivity. The wrong combination or order of products can lead to redness, stinging, clogged pores or the appearance of imperfections. On the contrary, a well-established routine supports a healthy skin barrier, even skin tone and long-term skin balance.
Step 1: Removing makeup
Removing makeup or removing SPF is often an underestimated step and many reach for cleansing products immediately. We should not underestimate the so-called makeup removers, which can be two-phase, i.e. oil in water – which perfectly dissolves even waterproof makeup – mascara, concealer, BB creams or SPF creams. When applying a larger amount of makeup, it is advisable to first apply the cotton swab thoroughly, e.g. to the eye area and then wipe it off. Be sure to avoid rubbing the swab over the skin.
Step 2: Cleansing the skin as an absolute foundation
Cleansing the skin is the most important step in the entire cosmetic routine. Without thorough cleansing, other products have no chance of working properly. Dirt, sebum, makeup residue, sweat and particles from the air accumulate on the skin during the day and night. If these impurities are not removed, they clog the pores and prevent the absorption of active substances.
Morning cleansing is mainly used to remove sebum and sweat that have formed during the night. Evening cleansing should be more thorough because it removes makeup, SPF products and all impurities from the whole day. In the evening, it is ideal to include a two-phase cleansing that combines a make-up remover and then a gentle cleansing product such as a cleansing cream, emulsion, gel or foam. You can also choose a cleansing water.
After proper cleansing, the skin should be clean, fresh and without a feeling of tightness. If the skin burns or is extremely dry after washing, this means that the cleansing product is too aggressive. In this case, choose products intended for delicate and sensitive skin, avoid strong mechanical cleansing.
Cleansing waters are used to cleanse the skin, contain moisturizing, soothing or gently exfoliating ingredients that cleanse, increase blood flow to the skin and improve its overall condition.
Step 3: Deep cleansing of the skin
Deep cleansing of the skin includes the well-known exfoliating preparations or peels. Here it is important to know your skin type, choose the right peeling product and the frequency of its use:
Delicate, thin and sensitive skin: 1x every two to three weeks
Oily skin: 1x per week
Step 4: Toning lotion as skin preparation
Tonic, toner, skin or toning water is often an underestimated step, but it plays a very important role. It cleanses the skin, removes any possible residue from the cleansing product, balances the pH of the skin, i.e. its protective layer, and thus prepares the skin for the application of the next step. Skin that is cleansed, hydrated and can absorb active ingredients much better.
Modern tonics are no longer just for cleansing the skin. Tonic is applied directly with your hands by gently pressing it into the skin.
Smooth and hydrated skin after tonic is the ideal basis for applying serum.
Step 5: Ampoules as perfect skin support
Skin ampoules are among the most popular skin care supplements. Ampoules are known for their high concentration of active ingredients and are used as a nutritional supplement, lifting, hydration or to eliminate wrinkles and unwanted pigmentation, as an intensive care treatment: 1 ampoule once a day/evening for 10 days and then a break. After intensive care, 1-2 ampoules once a week are sufficient.
Step 6: Serum/Essence as the most concentrated step in the routine
A serum or essence is a product that often contains the highest concentration of active ingredients. This product specifically addresses specific skin problems such as dehydration, pigmentation, wrinkles, acne or loss of elasticity. Thanks to its light texture, it can penetrate deeper into the skin than a cream.
Serum is always applied to clean and slightly damp skin, ideally after tonic. A small amount is enough, as it is a highly concentrated product. Too much serum is not absorbed by the skin and can lead to a sticky feeling on the skin.
If several serums are used at once, they should be layered from the lightest to the densest. However, in most cases, one well-chosen serum is completely sufficient.
Step 7: Face mask - perfect nutrition
There are many face masks on the market, choose the one that suits you best and include it in your routine at least once a week. Immerse your skin in the "silky feeling" - it will definitely thank you.
Step 8: Eye cream as special care
Eye cream is designed for the delicate and thin skin around the eyes. The special cream helps to hydrate the eye area, relieves swelling and dark circles, firms and regenerates. It leaves the eye area fresh and rested. Our TIP: always apply eye cream only by patting it on the skin, as the skin in the eye area is very thin, you will blood it beautifully, eliminate its stretching and thus cracking.
Step 9: Skin cream/emulsion = MUST
We choose skin cream according to our skin type as well as what we want and need to solve. The cream has the task of locking hydration in the skin and strengthening its protective barrier. The cream can support nutrition, firming, eliminate wrinkles or solve the problem of unwanted pigmentation. Without the cream, the serum would quickly evaporate and its effect would be short-lived. The cream also protects the skin from external influences and helps maintain its balance.
Skin emulsion is often confused with essence - however, it is a cream with the same active ingredients, but in a "thinner" form - i.e. with a lighter texture. Emulsions are suitable for combination or oily skin types, or if we sweat more – e.g. in the summer months.
Conclusion:
Oily/combination skin should reach for a skin emulsion or a light gel cream, while dry, dehydrated, wrinkled and mature skin will appreciate a thicker and oilier texture. The cream is applied with gentle movements, without unnecessary rubbing.
Step 10: SPF as an essential part of the routine
Protection from sun radiation is the most important anti-aging step. A protective cream, or a cream with a protection factor, so-called SPF, should be the last step in our routine, applied after the cream. Sun radiation is the main cause of premature skin aging, pigment spots and loss of elasticity.
Using SPF every day is essential even when it is cloudy or when we spend most of our time indoors. The protective factor protects the skin not only from sunburn, but also from long-term cell damage and even from blue light from monitors.
The difference between morning and evening routines
The morning routine is focused on protecting the skin during the day, while the evening routine focuses on nutrition, regeneration and renewal of the skin. In the morning, lighter textures and always SPF are used. In the evening, more active ingredients and more nutritious products can be included.
The correct setting of the morning and evening routine significantly affects the overall condition of the skin and its ability to regenerate.
The most common mistakes when layering cosmetics
The most common mistakes include insufficient makeup removal, omitting toner, omitting cream, excessive amounts of products and the wrong combination of active ingredients. Another common mistake is irregular use of SPF or constant switching of products without enough time to evaluate their effect.
A simple and consistent routine is always more effective than a crowded shelf of cosmetics.
How to Create a Functional Routine Without Unnecessary Steps
The best skin routine is one that you can stick to long-term. For most people, a routine consisting of cleansing, toning, serum, eye cream, cream, and SPF is completely sufficient. Each additional step should have a clear purpose and benefit for the skin.
When choosing products, it is important to monitor the reaction of the skin and give it time to adapt. Results usually appear after a few weeks of regular use.
Conclusion
Properly determining your skin type is the foundation. Knowing the correct layering of cosmetics is one of the easiest ways to improve the condition of your skin without having to buy new products.
