Seborrhea or seborrheic dermatitis is a chronic form of eczema, an inflammatory disease of non-infectious origin. Seborrhea means overproduction of sebum, dermatitis means inflammation of the skin.
Red inflammatory foci appear on the skin, on which there are white to yellow scales. It affects parts of the body where there are many sebaceous glands, the upper back, chest, armpits, groin, scalp, on the face - in the area of the nose, eyebrows, eyelids, nasolabial folds and forehead.
Symptoms of seborrheic dermatitis on the face:
- peeling skin, scales.
- patches of oily skin, covered with white to yellow scales.
- rashes that may be lighter in people with darker skin and more red in people with pale skin.
- itching.
Seborrhea can affect people of any age, although it affects men more often. In adults, asymptomatic and symptomatic periods alternate throughout life. It is caused by a combination of environmental factors and is usually triggered by an inflammatory response to excess yeast - malassezia - an organism that normally lives on the surface of the skin, when it overgrows the immune system overreacts to it, leading to a fungal infection that results in skin changes.
Common triggers that make the condition worse:
- excessive activity of the sebaceous glands, with a large production of sebum, an environment is created in which yeast thrives,
- stress leads to a weakening of immunity,
- hormonal changes affect sebum production,
- missing group B vitamins,
- unbalanced diet, too much sugar, animal fats and spicy, irritating foods,
- bad habits such as smoking, alcohol and lack of sleep,
- wrong cosmetics, too irritating products.
Preparations that are used to relieve symptoms:
- antifungals that regulate the occurrence of yeast, relieve inflammation and remove scales.
- keratolytics containing salicylic acid, help to soften and remove scales, have an anti-inflammatory effect.
- suitable cosmetic products.
